Democrat Congressman Ted Lieu (D-Calif) threatened President Donald Trump with a lawsuit
from the House of Representatives if the president declares a “made-up” national emergency to deal with migrants at the U.S. border with Mexico.
Speaking to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Lieu promised that House Democrats would sue to force the president to justify any emergency declaration, and that the case might make its way to the Supreme Court.
“If he wants to reopen government, and then declare a national emergency, and then we have the courts battle it out, that’s something I can live,” Lieu said.
“You can’t just make up a national emergency and do something you couldn’t do normally,” he added.
