Earlier this week, President Trump signed an executive order creating a “Space Command,” a new sub-organization within the Pentagon that will oversee military space operations.
“I direct the establishment, consistent with United States law, of United States Space Command as a functional Unified Combatant Command,” said the president’s memo to the Department of Defense.
Space Command is expected to develop “tactics, techniques and procedures” to allow the military to protect the United States from invasion from above. Meanwhile, Trump’s proposed “Space Force” is still in the works. Unlike Space Command, Space Force would be an entirely new branch of the armed forces, joining the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard.
